The Humane Society of Montgomery County, Inc. (HSMC) was established in 1972 and became a private, non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)3 status corporation in 1974. The current animal shelter was built at 407 Sgt. Ed Holcombe Blvd South in Conroe, Texas, in 2007 after 25 years at the same location off Dallas St.
HSMC accepts strays and unwanted animals from the public and functions as the shelter for surrendered and impounded animals collected by the Animal Control Departments of the cities of Conroe and Willis. HSMC also has offsite adoption events in The Woodlands and Conroe area. For addresses, maps, and hours of our centers and offsite adoption events, please see our location page.
The issue of dog and cat overpopulation has reached crisis proportions. It is estimated that as many as 15 to 27 million homeless dogs and cats die each year in animal shelters across the nation. Without the HSMC's educational and low-cost spay/neuter programs, the numbers of unwanted stray and diseased animals can only continue to increase in Montgomery County.
Primary funding of the agency is through various community fundraising events and efforts of others on behalf of HSMC. We house an average of 125 dogs and up to 200 cats per day. The shelters are supported by the generosity of private individuals and local businesses, memberships, and special fundraising events held throughout the year.
